Visit Sarehole Mill

The mill was built in 1765 on the site of Biddle's Mill, which dated back to 1540. It was originally used for grinding corn, but in the industrial revolution it was used for blade grinding and metal rolling.

Matthew Boulton used the Mill for making buttons and for metal rolling until he moved his operations to Handsworth in 1761.

JRR Tolkien used the mill and other local settings as inspiration for 'Hobbiton' and 'The Shire' in 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'.
